How to Clean Green Pond Water

Green pond water is caused by the presence of suspended algae or microscopic plants known as phytoplankton. These algae multiply rapidly under certain conditions, such as ample sunlight, high levels of nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, and stagnant water.

While green pond water is not harmful to aquatic life, it can be unsightly and indicate imbalances in the pond ecosystem. In addition, excessive algae growth can lead to oxygen depletion, which can harm fish and other organisms living in the pond.

How to Clear the Algae and Prevent it from Reappearing?

The best approach to keeping pond water clean and clear that gives a long lasting effect is creating a balanced pond ecosystem. This is a holistic approach to naturally clear pond water from algae and maintain a healthy aquatic environment. Here is how to achieve this:

Water Movement

Creating water movement helps to prevent stagnation, which can promote algae growth. It distributes oxygen throughout the pond, balanced water temperatures, and prevents debris from settling at the bottom. This is why we recommend keeping your pond pump running 24/7. If you have any areas of your pond where the water current doesn’t reach, consider adding a little decorative fountain (such as a spitter or a spray nozzle) to add water movement to this area. Another option is to use Aquascape Pond Powerhead Pump.

Aeration

Proper aeration is crucial for maintaining healthy oxygen levels in the pond, which supports aerobic bacteria that break down organic waste and inhibit algae growth. Aeration can be achieved through various methods such as air pumps and aeration kits, fountains, waterfalls, or surface agitation.

Biological Filtration and Beneficial Bacteria

Biological filters provide a habitat for beneficial bacteria to colonize and break down organic waste, including algae nutrients like ammonia and nitrites. Biological filtration systems include biofilters and filter media where bacteria can thrive. A weekly beneficial bacteria treatment is one of the most crucial parts of the biological filtration for the balanced ecosystem and health of your pond.

Mechanical Filtration

Mechanical filters remove physical debris and particles from the water, such as leaves, uneaten fish food, and algae cells. When debris stays in a pond, it disintegrates, releasing nutrients that feed algae and harm the pond’s ecosystem. While mechanical and pressure filter systems filter out debris that sink down into the body of water, pond skimmers filter out debris from the surface of the water before it can settle down and start disintegrating. Because pond skimmers remove the debris before it can cause any harm to your pond’s ecosystem we highly recommend installing a pond skimmer while building a pond.

Water Plants

Any kind of water plant provides habitat for beneficial bacteria and competes for nutrition with algae. As algae is technically also a water plant, the more water plants are in the pond the less room and nutrients there is left for algae to thrive.

UV Sterilization and Ionization

UV clarifiers and ionizers can offer an effective way to tackle persistent algae issues.

UV clarifiers use ultraviolet light to kill algae cells and pathogens in the water that passes through, disrupting their reproductive cycles and preventing algae blooms. UV clarifiers are effective at controlling green water algae (free-floating algae) but may not be as effective against string algae (attached algae). UV clarifiers’ ultraviolet light bulbs lose effectiveness over time and should be changed every year.

Ionizers, on the other hand, are an effective solution for managing string algae (attached algae) in ponds. These devices work by releasing copper ions into the water passing through, which disrupt the growth and reproduction of string algae. By targeting the algae's cellular processes, ionizers inhibit its ability to thrive, leading to a reduction in algae populations over time. This method is particularly useful for controlling string algae without harming other aquatic organisms when applied correctly.

Quick-Fix Algae Treatments

A few different water treatments can be used to quickly resolve algae issues in the pond. Products such as Aquascape Pond & Debris Clarifier (Liquid), Aquascape Quickfix Pond Gummy or CrystalClear ProFix can quickly clarify pond water and restore water quality. Products such as Aquascape Rock and Fountain Cleaner, Aquascape Barley Straw Liquid Extract, Aquascape Waterfall & Rock Cleaner Professional Grade or CrystalClear Algae Off can quickly dissolve debris, including string algae, from waterfalls, streams, and rocks. It's important to note that while these treatments can provide a quick solution to clear pond water from algae, they may need to be repeated regularly to maintain the results.
